Halabja is a city in the south of Kurdistan with a population of 250000. Kurdish is the language of the people. The major generally speak the Sorani dialect. Halabja is surrounded by Hewraman and shnrwe range in the northeast, Balambo range in the south and sirwan river in the west.

What exactly happened on 16 March 1988?

Four days before newroz celebration while the nature was regenerating itself and the blossom were coming out, the Iraqi aircraft caused a catastrophe and committed a crime against humanity in Halabja. The town was completely destroyed by Ba’ath regime. 5000 innocent people were killed and buried in mass graves and 10000 were injured. Some were lying on the ground and throwing up green coloured liquid, while others became terror-stricken and started laughing uncontrollably before falling on the ground.

A lethal cocktail of mustard gas and the nerve agents tubun, sarin and VX was used, as reported by the BBC. Although the world was a witness of a calamity, the international community remained silent. There was no celebration, no blossom, no regeneration, all they could see was death.

Long-term effects of chemical attack

Miscarriage, colon cancer, heart disease, others cancers, respiratory ailments, skin and eye problem are the most common consequences of chemical attack. After this calamity, the number of abortions has been increased outstandingly in this area. There are concerns that the attack may be having a lasting genetic impact on the Kurdish population.

The author hopes that such a crime against humanity may never be repeated and the Kurdish nation reach their dreams, the independent Kurdistan and the international community needs to break its silence after 33 years.
