Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) states the presence of the consular offices in the Kurdistan Region is in line with the laws of Iraq and Kurdistan Region and “no one has the right to ask Kurdistan Region to close down a consulate.”

An official of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), recently criticized the existence of 36 consulates in Kurdistan Region describing it “abnormal”. The IRGC official had also called on KRG to close down the Saudi Arabia consulate in Erbil.

“The diplomatic offices and representations of countries in the Kurdistan Region and their activities and mission comply with the laws of the Iraqi government and Kurdistan Region,” the statement reads.

“No one has the right to demand KRG to shut a consulate,” the statement said.

The statement also says such remarks of the Iranian official are “unjustifiable intervention in internal affairs of Iraq and Kurdistan Region.”

Kurdistan Region is willing to have good relations with neighbouring countries, the statement notes, calling on the Republic of Iran to take a serious stance against such irresponsible remarks which are not in favour of Iran and Kurdistan Region.
