U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter arrived in the Kurdistan Region on Sunday (December 11) to meet Kurdish senior officials.

According to Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook, Carter will meet Masoud Barzani during his visit in the region.

The U.S. official arrived in Baghdad earlier and met with Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to discuss the fight against Islamic State (ISIS) militants and the battle for Mosul.

Abadi’s office released a statement following the meeting that both leaders discussed the Mosul offensive and how to ensure security is returned to the liberated areas as well as the training of the Iraqi security forces.

Kurdish and Iraqi forces began the much-anticipated offensive to regain control of Mosul on October 17 after an official decree by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

Forces have made significant gains since operations began, drawing praise from officials for the high level of coordination among the various units.
