“This film, which we have just discovered, offers a close-up look at the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters,” festival organizers said in unveiling the special screening of the documentary.

The Cannes film festival has added another film as a special screening to its official selection: Bernard-Henri Levy’s Peshmerga.

“This film, which we have just discovered, offers a close-up look at the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters,” festival organizers said Monday in an announcement. “With just a small team, Peshmerga … are the military forces of the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan. Peshmerga means ‘one who confronts death’ or ‘one who faces death. ‘Pesh’ means to stand in front of (loosely translated as to confront or face) while ‘merga’ means death. … The director traveled 1,000 kilometers along the Iraqi frontier, from south to north, filming war situations, landscapes and the faces of men and women rarely seen in the wider world.”

Following an ISIS offensive against Iraqi Kurdistan in August 2014, Peshmerga and other Kurdish forces from neighboring countries have been waging fighting ISIS in both Iraq and Syria.

The last-minute screening of the 92-minute movie is set to take place Friday.

“If demand is high, another screening will possibly be added on Saturday,” organizers said.
